Perched on the southwestern tip of our island, the Sunset Bar offers unparalled panorama of the Maldivian sunset.
It is located within a natural clearing along the coastal vegetation, and achieves zero impact on existing mature trees.
Overlooking the clear azure waters, the bar offers perfect opportunity for guests to experience the magical golden hour on this tropical paradise island.

Seeing and envisioning are two very different human faculties. To many, this photo shows nothing more than a dirt road cutting across a jungle.
But Genesis Architects & Missionary Ronny Heyboer ‘sees’ beyond that - an operational air strip in the middle of the Borneo jungle, with MAF airplanes (@maf_us) conducting emergency medical evacuations.
With this airstrip, more people from the Village as well as surrounding isolated areas can have access to medical and hospitalisation care within minutes (instead of days) and the reduced response time is going to save significant lives.
Genesis Architects is honoured to support the design and construction of this critical infrastructure, bringing hope to isolated people groups all around Kalimantan.

We added a skylight and inserted a staircase connecting the first and second floors. Throughout the day, the sun shifts to create a dramatic play of light and shadow.

This expansion marked a new beginning – a new light – in their company history; and we used this as a narrative and design generator to integrate the new and the existing as well as for way-finding purposes.
Bright yellow paints – mimicking streaks of lights – are applied onto walls where they bend and continue over wall and floor surfaces, announcing new entrances and connectivity between two previously separate spaces. The resulting space is minimal but pleasant; neutral yet exuberant.

We drew inspirations from the historicity of the area and personified the restaurant as a mysterious but well-travelled purveyor of fine food and spices from all over the world. This narrative is expressed through every space and detail. Thematically, different spaces within the restaurant exude strong symbolism and branding of voyage and exploration.

We work closely with local builders and suppliers, and support cottage industries as far as possible in our attempts to create multiple social impacts.

Écoles Modulaires, or Modular Schools, is set to be a collection of schools to be built all across rural areas of Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) as part of our support for NGOs and ongoing transformational missions efforts in DRC for the ‘Kadogos’ – a Swahili term meaning ‘little ones’.

The ceiling of the post-production studio became canvas for a static art installation: reflective discs of various colors metaphorically depicting manna falling from an open heaven. This concept was also translated into the privacy stickers along glass walls, adding vibrancy and dynamism into the space.

Genesis Architects was commissioned to design Tungling Production’s new premise - as it sets its sight to becoming the region’s leading production / recording studio and HQ. The curved wall at the Premise’s main entrance embody the Tungling’s mandate and spirit of revelation - ‘seek and you will find’.

While Covid-19 has stopped us from physically travelling this year, it has not stopped us from continuing our works overseas. In fact, in recent months, we have started new exciting projects - despite the restrictions.
For instance, in Rwanda, we are thrilled to work with Ambassador of Rwanda, His Excellency Jean Uwihanganye.
Last week, we had a fruitful meeting with Ambassador, and discussed extensive and exciting projects in the pipeline.
These projects are architectural and social in nature, and will bring great impact and transformation to the nation of Rwanda and her people, including those who have been historically-marginalised.

For us, the challenge of designing small spaces often leads to interesting resolution. In Yunnan, we designed a feature that is able to serve our client’s multifarious needs. It’s a door, a counter, a divider, and a display - all in one.

“Children shouldn’t work on fields, but on dreams.”
⠀
Today is the World Day Against Child Labour. Approximately 168 million children are already trapped in child labour, but are now at an even greater risk of facing circumstances that are even more difficult and working longer hours, as reviewed by @iloinfo.
⠀
Africa ranks the highest percentage in child labour, with 72 million children being exploited in its worst forms as child slaves, child soldiers, drug traffickers, being used as debt bondage and sexual exploitation. Being employed against their will, child labour not only robs them of their innocence but of their hope and outlook of life.
In our last trip to DR Congo, we witnessed first-hand the heartbreaking sense of animosity and the lack of hope these children have for their future. Multitudes have no access to healthcare, food and education.
⠀
As part of our collaboration with non-profit organisations, ÉCOLES MODULAIRES is purpose-designed for assembly in multiple ways and on various site conditions all across the rural areas of Congo for the ‘Kadogos’ – a Swahili term meaning ‘little ones’.
And having witnessed how these schools have transformed communities and brought hope into darkness, Genesis Architects is ready to take this prototype to more communities and nations in Africa and beyond.

This is probably our most beautiful construction site ever. It’s not every day we get to see heavy machinery parked on white sandy beach against the turquiose waters of the Laccadive Sea.
⠀
The sight of the tractor was an epiphany for us: the tractor moves slowly, but it delivers a high tractive effort and a massive output. This beats running back and forth a few times - only to deliver a quarter of what these tractors can. ⠀
Likewise the pandemic may seem to slow the world down, however, do not underestimate the great potential within you. Embrace the slow and stay resilient & strong. ⠀
Greater days are ahead of us!

Many nations are currently experiencing varying degrees of lockdown. Living Waters Village in Borneo is no exception. ⠀
Something that cannot be stopped, however, is their resilience and indomitable spirit to care for more than 700 orphaned, abused and abandoned children.
Genesis Architects is honoured to partner missionary Ronny Heyboer, to design — pro bono — the Village’s latest community facility, a 1,200-seater aula that will be used to support social, educational and religious programs.

To promote family-friendliness, two main characters were created in the Rump universe — resulting in an ambiance that is fun, edgy and witty; and adding an unforgettable sense of intrigue and comic relief in the mindspace of our diners.

The derelict interior of this single-storey 18th century Victorian house was beautifully transformed with a modern twist. The bedroom on the ground floor was maintained, while the dining/ living room was opened up to the inner court. Bathrooms were retrofitted to modern luxury standards.

Today is World’s Environment Day.
Around this time last year, we visited a village in Rwanda and stayed in this thatched hut with the locals - an amazing experience!
As building material, thatch is environmentally-friendly and economically-viable. It’s fast-growing, and easily harvested with minimal equipment. Its cultivation also provides employment and livelihood for many communities.
Let us be conscious with our choices, and be eco-friendly.

#Throwback to our last site visit where our team of builders push for progress.
Piles are offloaded onto the beach, water villas are being completed, and roof materials being fixed onto lagoon villas.
We are thankful for our builders and pray they are keeping safe during this time of pandemic.

Genesis Architects conceptualised an extended dwelling for a couple and their four married children within two adjoining lots that were amalgamated.
Through careful planning, we created a ‘village’ consisting of several houses, that are both independent and inter-dependent, within a large plot of land. To reinforce the idea of inter-dependence, we combined all their individual communal spaces (living, dining, recreational, etc) and scattered them across the first storey of all the buildings. This way, we create the necessity and opportunities for more intimate social interaction among family members.

The high ceiling made the room volume rather disproportionate. A ceiling feature was added to counter this, and act as visual anchor.
Adopting a neutral palette of colors and materials, the overhead planting and Amazonian suar wood tabletop takes center stage.

In 2012, Oxford University Press estimated that around 30,000 little ones were still operating with armed groups.
Today, with better school infrastructure, and better access, children in conflict zones are putting down their arms for a more sustainable option – education.
